This guide presents background material to acquaint elementary social studies teachers with the cultural systems of the Arunta and Kazak tribes and the more technologically sophisticated American way of life. It is part of the Anthropology Curriculum Project and is designed to be used in conjunction with curriculum guides for grades 1 and 4 (SO 011 790-795). This booklet is organized into three sections which describe each system in terms of cultural universals including housing, clothing, tools, transportation, communication, ways of earning a living, social organization in the home and community, and religion. It defines each universal, describes its functions, and examines the factors governing choices made by each culture. Section I describes the American way of life, its technological sophistication and variety, its money-based economy, nuclear family structure, and need for elected community leaders. Section II examines the Australian aboriginal Arunta tribe, focusing on its very simple economic systems and social organization. Section III explores the sheep herding Kazaks, a southern Russian tribe whose culture is more sophisticated than the Arunta but much less so than the American. The text emphasizes anthropological concepts and terms throughout, delineating their meanings and uses, and calling attention to their importance by underlining them. A bibliography concludes each section of text. (CK)
