The 1976 and 1977 Community/Junior College Conferences were unified under a single general topic, "The Community College: Its Evolution and Clientele." During the 1976 conference, Raymond E. Schultz provided a historical perspective of community college teachers and teaching and Richard L. Storinger described the establishment and growth of Oakton Community College, emphasizing the student development model, the cluster system, the interdisciplinary approach to instruction, and the non-academic orientation of the college. The 1977 conference looked at the variety of community college clientele with special characteristics and needs. Benjamin R. Wygal's presentation focused on responding to the needs of diverse clientele, drawing upon the experiences of Florida Junior College at Jacksonville. Then, Frank G. Pogue led a discussion on the social characteristics of rural and urban poor Blacks and suggested ways for the innovative community/junior college to tap this viable student market. Finally, Robert F. Kronick examined the psycho-social characteristics of the incarcerated, describing the operation of the judicial and penal systems, education in prison, and parole. The conference proceedings include a roster of participants. (AYC)
