This report is based on a questionnaire survey directed in spring and fall 1977 to all state foreign language supervisors. In those cases where state totals were not available, questionnaires were sent directly to various school districts. An analysis of the compiled figures showed that in fall 1976, the public secondary schools (PSS) in the 7-12 range reported a foreign language enrollment of over 3.78 million, comprising 17.9 % of the total PSS school enrollment of over 21 million students. Two years earlier, in 1974, 4.03 million foreign language enrollments were reported from the PSS population of nearly 21 million students. The report consists of an introductory summary of results, summary tables and individual tables by region and state, with comparative data from surveys undertaken in 1970 and 1974. (Author)
