Emphasizing the importance of the role of primary preventive mental health, an inservice program was designed and implemented by the Tri-County Human Services Center in rural, southwest Wisconsin to help school personnel deal with the signs and symptoms of teacher burnout. Acting on the principle that the prevention of disorders, as well as the treatment of them, is in the best interest of the community, the roleplay inservice was presented to 429 teachers and administrators in 8 school districts, in hopes that by strengthening teachers' emotional health, the program would also positively affect students by decreasing burnout symptomology that might interfere with the quality of classroom performance. Responses to evaluation questionnaires revealed that the majority of participants in the inservice indicated they were able to identify various symptoms of burnout displayed in the roleplaying, felt that the workshop was effective, and thought that it would be beneficial to themselves and their peers in dealing with stress, depression and other symptoms of burnout.
