- This old house dates back before 1841. It is situated off Bourke Street, not far from Spencer Street. For 10 years it was the residence of Sir Redmond Barry - founder of the Melbourne Public Library. The tree on the left of the picture is a fine old gnarled mulberry tree - the last survivor of Sir Redmond Barry's fruit garden. "In the city of Melbourne rate-book for the year 1847 - the earliest rate-book preserved - the house is thus described: Brick house, 5 rooms, servants room, and stable with garden: annual value £65: rate 1/- in the £1 : owner and occupier, Redmond Barry" Inside are the remains of what must have been handsome cedar cupboards with shelves which doubtless contained the books that their generous owner was accustomed to lend to all the early colonists who chose to come for them.--Typed on label.
