Ron Harvey, born in Perth (1934), discusses his early life and family background; his schooling; WWII; getting his first job at age 12; leaving school at age 14; working for and serving with the Australian Army; moving to Melbourne and then Canberra; playing in local basketball competitions; the beginning of a national basketball competition; coaching school and men's teams; being involved in A.C.T. basketball administration; people he coached who became professional basketballers; working for the Public Service Board (1963-); joining the Prime Minister's Department; Prime Ministers Malcolm Fraser and Bob Hawke; other political figures that he worked with; the establishment of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS); the Moscow Olympics boycott (1980); joining the Department of Sport, Tourism and Recreation; joining the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; the Bicentenary celebrations (1988); his work as Director of the AIS; the importance of coaches.
