- Summary:
-
A review of current literature related to assistance for beginning teachers focused upon the following questions: (1) In what areas do beginning teachers need assistance? (2) What types of assistance do beginning teachers need? (3) Who should provide the assistance? (4) How should this assistance be timed? and (5) What other important considerations have evolved in studies of beginning teacher assistance? In conjunction with the literature review, a survey instrument was developed based upon key elements revealed by the literature. Responses to the questionnaire were obtained from 59 teachers. Based on survey results, beginning teachers gave problems associated with learning to instruct and with learning about the schools as an instructional system a higher priority than other problems they face. The majority of problems faced by beginning teachers were rated as best solved through a beginning teacher assistance program. A summary of the findings includes recommendations for developing beginning teacher assistance programs and suggestions for further research on the subject. The survey instrument and results are appended. (JD)
