This report discusses an iterative methodology for logical database design (LDD). The methodology includes four phases: local information-flow modeling, global information-flow modeling, conceptual schema design, and external schema modeling. These phases are intended to make maximum use of available information and user expertise, including the use of a previous needs analysis, and to prepare a firm foundation for physical database design and system implementation. The methodology recommends analysis from different points of view--organization, function, and event--in order to ensure that the logical database design accurately reflects the requirements of the entire population of future users. Also recommended is computer support from a data dictionary system in order to conveniently and accurately handle the volume and complexity of design documentation and analysis. This report places the methodology in the context of the complete system life cycle, and an appendix of illustrations shows examples of how the four phases of the methodology can be implemented.
