- Summary:
-
The literature of psycholinguistics and multilingualism is reviewed to examine the relationship between macrological social variables such as social class, and individual variables related to language behavior in a multilingual setting. The growing body of evidence assessing the link between certain social and community dimensions and specific behavior is found to be largely correlational, with little effort made to explore the process by which societal and individual variables influence each other and affect the individual's behavior. Social network investigation might bridge the gap between sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic analysis of multilingual behavior by addressing the question, "How does one become cognizant of the social structure and its link with language behavior?"
