Clem Apted discusses his family background; his parents and siblings; memories of the family's house in Glebe, Sydney; poverty and illness in the family; being placed in Gill Memorial Home for Boys after his mother's death (1957); his feelings about being placed in the Home; the backgrounds of children in the Home; prejudices against Home children; memories of journeying to Gill; the buildings and dormitories; officers' quarters; children to staff ratio; daily routine; his lack of contact with other children and the community outside of the Home; the consequences of this segregation; playing sport at school; games; food; chores; favoured children; showering; the treatment of bed wetters; punishments and abuse; illness and medical care; memories of defiance; stories of runaways and their celebrity status; children being referred to by numbers; clothing; photos and personal possessions; thefts.
