- Summary:
-
Performance measurement has become an important method of assessing and improving the efficacy of large organizations, including in Australian local government. This paper considers the extent and nature of performance measurement in Australian local government. The paper provides a synoptic review of the measurement of performance in the local public sector by examining its organisational context and by providing an appropriate conceptual framework. The discussion then focuses on performance measurement in Australian local government and assesses national performance indicators, state-based performance indicators, and process benchmarking.
