Conclusions of major reviews of the literature on student ratings of college teachers are summarized for the period 1971 to September 1988. Several factor analytic studies have concluded that student ratings are multidimensional and that no single item will be useful for all purposes. Consistency, stability, and generalizability are aspects of reliability generally discussed. The validity of student rating forms has been defined in terms of student learning, through the self-ratings of the instructor, and through the ratings of others. In spite of widespread faculty concern, research has shown relatively few sources of bias in student ratings of teachers. Some relationships that may bias student rating data include: (1) faculty rank; (2) expressiveness; (3) student motivation; (4) expected grades; (5) course level; (6) academic field; (7) workload or difficulty; (8) ratings that are not anonymous; (9) presence of the instructor as the rating is made; and (10) purpose of the ratings. In general, student ratings have been found reliable, valid, and relatively free of bias. (SLD)
