A mail survey was conducted in February 1989 of trainees who had completed the Massachusetts Chapter 74, five-course, 18-credit vocational-technical teacher training program in its revised and competency-based format. The survey was designed to assess trainees' satisfaction with the training program, to determine their perceptions of how well the courses prepared them for teaching, and to identify factors related to trainees' satisfaction. A total of 160 (66 percent) trainees to whom surveys were mailed returned completed surveys, and more than half of the respondents provided written comments. Trainees were most satisfied with these features of the program: instructors' willingness to help trainees, amount of time allowed to complete all five courses, instructors' knowledge of course material, methods used for evaluating trainees' performance, instructors' teaching skills, and number of courses required. Trainees were least satisfied with these four program features: competency-based education approach, course materials, how completely topics were covered, and course assignments and activities. Fewer than half of the trainees preferred competency-based education. Students indicated that the program had best prepared them for about half of the teaching activities described. Factors found to be significantly related to trainees' assessment of the teacher training program included school where the courses were completed, gender, highest educational level, vocational program area the trainee teaches, number of years of nonteaching work experience in the vocational program area, and preference for competency-based education. (The survey form, statistical results, and written comments are included.) (KC)
