The demand for change and improvement in the education of coming generations represents a significant and unprecedented challenge to the U.S. educational system. This book is intended to be of help to those who are trying to change educational administration preparation programs in ways that make them more relevant to the roles these leaders play. It summarizes the learning gained since 1987 by universities that have joined the Danforth Foundation in its efforts to stimulate new approaches to the training of educational leaders through the Danforth Programs for the Preparation of School Principals (DPPSP). Five universities were selected as case-study settings: University of Alabama, Central Florida University, University of Connecticut, California State University at Fresno, and University of Washington. The first of nine chapters, by Donn Gresso, who was the initial DPPSP director, describes the thinking behind the foundation's efforts and the process that was devised to create and maintain foundation-university partnerships. Chapter 2, by Paula Cordeiro, Jo Ann Krueger, David Parks, Nan Restine, and Peter Wilson, presents a summary of the survey of all Danforth-related preparation programs. Chapters 3 through 8, by Mike Milstein, include the results of the five case studies and a synthesis of what was learned overall. Finally, chapter 9, by Peter Wilson, explores the ramifications of what has been learned and points toward future issues and directions for educational leadership of U.S. schools and colleges of education.
