This resource paper provides an overview of student financial aid and discusses the roles and responsibilities of those who play a significant part in the process of providing aid to students with disabilities. The paper also addresses the financial aid application procedure and suggests timeliness and resources for those individuals who are seeking financial aid. The information in this paper reflects information for the 1999-2000 school year. Included is a brief description of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Agencies, the services they provide, and the interaction between the state VR agency and the financial aid office of a postsecondary institution. Federal programs described include: Federal Pell grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants; Federal Work-Study; Federal Perkins Loans; Federal Family Education Loans; and Direct Loans. Specific program terminology explained includes: "family contribution,""cost of attendance,""financial aid package," and "disability related expenses." Also addressed are other sources of financial assistance including Supplemental Security Income and Social Security, Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, state programs, and private scholarships. Sources of information including scholarship search services and Internet sites are listed. (Contains 12 references.) (DB)
