This report addresses the application of transformative leadership to higher education, examining four constituent groups: students, faculty, student affairs professionals, and presidents and other administrators. Chapter 1 explains the need for rethinking higher education leadership practices. Chapter 2 describes the principles of transformative leadership, considers group and individual principles underlying effective leadership, describes how to integrate these principles in the actual practice of leadership, and discusses the implicit and explicit values that guide the implementation of these principles. Chapters 3-6 highlight the four constituent groups, analyzing roles and expectations for each group and suggesting how they can practice the principles of transformative leadership both individually and collectively. The report concludes with a chapter encouraging members of the academic community to develop plans of action for exercising transformative leadership on campus. It identifies personal and institutional resources to help capitalize on the numerous opportunities that campuses offer for engaging in the transformative process, and it offers suggestions for creating an institutional climate that facilitates and reinforces individual and collective efforts to practice transformative leadership.
