- Biography/History:
-
Dancer, early childhood educator, lecturer and dance curator. Lee Christofis was born in Brisbane and trained as a dancer with the Queensland Ballet. He became the first male graduate of the Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers College in 1976 and the first male to work in and direct a child care centre in Australia. He was vice president of the Australian Dance Council (Ausdance) and lectured in dance history, and arts criticism and management at the University of Melbourne. He also wrote on dance for The Australian and other publications, and was a broadcaster for ABC Radio arts and music programs.
Christofis was appointed curator of dance at the National Library of Australia in 2006. The National Library of Australia exhibition, "The Ballets Russes in Australia 1936-1940", examined the impact on Australian culture of the visits by the three Ballets Russes companies directed by Col. Wassily de Basil, and the beginnings of professional ballet in Australia. In conjunction with the exhibition Christofis produced and presented the series, "The astonishing Ballets Russes" for the ABC in 2009. He has conducted a number of oral history interviews for the National Library's performing arts collection. Christofis retired from the National Library of Australia in 2013. Christofis received an Australian Dance Award for Services to Dance in 2009, and the Victorian Inaugural Multicultural Award for Services to the Community in 2001.
