MS Acc10.085 comprises approximately 300 scripts prepared by Gary Neat between 1974-1978, whilst employed by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) as a television and radio foreign correspondent in Southeast Asia. Neat covered Indochina, Thailand, Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, India, China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Macau. News situations and topics he reported include: the end of the war in Indochina (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia); Australia-Indonesia relations; the 1975 Timor crisis (the Balibo Five); the flight of Indochinese refugees; the emergence of China and India; and coups in a number of countries (1 box).

Journalist. Born in 1948, Gary Francis Neat was a war correspondent for radio and television with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He was flown into Jakarta three days after the death of the five Australian newsmen (the Balibo Five) in East Timor. Neat was also an advertising and public relations executive, journalist and political strategist. He studied politics and communications in Europe and North America and received the Chevening Scholarship to study at the London School of Economics. In 1987 Neat was the state director of the Liberal Party in Queensland and ran unsuccessfully that year for the Senate in the federal election. Neat was founding director of the ADSHAN consulting group, serving as its chair in 2010. He is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Fellow of other key Australian institutes. Formerly a chairman of the Australian Marketing Industry Review, Neat has been a past and present member of government boards including trade, education and health, environment, child welfare and business development.
