Correspondence and despatches from, or relating to, Sir Edward Macarthur. 1) Two letters, 3 Aug. 1857 and 3 Nov. 1854, to Macarthur from London. 2) Letter 18 Aug. 1857 from Sir Henry Barkly to Henry Labouchere forwarding a copy of a despatch from the War Office and with enclosures dated 1, 13, 26 May 1857, re reductions in provisions and pay of the military forces in Victoria. 3) Despatches and private letters 1856 from Macarthur, as administrator of Victoria, to Labouchere referring to the death of Sir Charles Hotham, pardoning of convicts, the proposed renewal of transportation, dissolution of the Legislative Council, the election of the first Victorian parliament and the arrival of Sir Henry Barkly. 4) Addresses and replies by Macarthur on his retirement as administrator Jan. 1857 and correspondence 20 Aug. and 22 Oct. 1857 re a proposed honour for himself. 5) Letters Apr. to Sept. 1857 regarding medals struck in Victoria for the Queen.
- Biography/History:

Soldier and Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria 1856. Eldest son of John Macarthur. In 1851 he was posted to Sydney as Deputy adjutant-general. On his promotion to colonel in 1854, he moved to Melbourne and after the death of Governor Hotham in Dec. 1855 was administrator of Victoria for almost twelve months.
