- "The Riqueval entrance to the St. Quentin Canal Tunnel, captured on 29th September, 1918 and photographed on 3rd October, 1918. This tunnel, which formed a strongly fortified section in the Hindenburg Defence System, was a 'huge unhealthy barracks', wherein it was stated the enemy could secrete two divisions of men by means of barges moored along the entire length of the tunnel. The canal itself also formed a serious obstacle being deep and wide and honeycombed with dug-outs and machine-gun posts. The whole system however, was captured in the general offensive by Australian, American and British troops."--Printed caption.
