- Biography/History:
-
The invitations are made out to Mr W. A. Barton, who is almost certainly Sir Edmund Barton's second son Wilfred Alexander Barton (1880-1953). In 1901 he would have been aged about 21 and a student at the University of Sydney. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School, and entered the University in 1900 with distinctions in Classics and English, graduating in 1903 with the University medal in both of these subjects. In 1904 he was awarded one of the first Rhodes scholarships for New South Wales and left Australia for Magdalen College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 1908. In 1913, when he married a Miss Olive Peters of Cambridge, he was practicing as a barrister in London. After the 1914-18 war, in which he served as a captain, being mentioned in dispatches, he returned to the law, and became a Q.C. He died in Chelmsford, Essex in 1953.
