MS Acc11.054 This collection comprises material relating to John Menadue's career as a businessman, public commentator, senior public servant and diplomat. Comprises papers, correspondence, speech and lecture notes, photographs, newspaper clippings and articles relating to: running for office in Hume; News Limited; application to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC); Prime Minister and Cabinet; the Whitlam Government and the Loans affair; 'The Dismissal' and the Fraser Government; dispatches to Department of Foreign Affairs as Australian Ambassador to Japan; Immigration and Ethnic Affairs; the Department of Trade and export competitiveness; QANTAS; Telstra; State Rail Authority; multiculturalism; the Garnaut Report; and Menadue's 1999 autobiography, (9 boxes + 1 small folio box + 5 colour photographs + 2 folders).

Public servant, chief executive officer and ambassador. John Laurence Menadue was born in South Australia in 1935. He graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1956 as a Bachelor of Economics. From 1960 until 1967 he was private secretary to Gough Whitlam. In 1967 he became general manager, News Limited, Sydney. Menadue was head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet from 1974 to 1976. He was closely involved in the events of November 11, 1975, and worked for prime ministers Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser.
He was Australian ambassador to Japan from 1976 until 1980. He returned to Australia in 1980 to take up the position of head, Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, was appointed head of the Department of Trade in December 1983, was chief executive officer of Qantas from June 1986 to July 1989, director of Telstra from December 1994 to October 1996, and chairman of the Australia Japan Foundation from 1991-1998. In 1985 Menadue was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for public service.
