- Biography/History:
-
Architect and academic. Gareth Edward Roberts was born at Liverpool, England in 1928. Both sides of his family were from north Wales. After school and two years of national service he enrolled in the School of Architecture at Liverpool University, graduating with a degree in architecture in 1953 and civic design in 1954. In 1957 his employer, Holfords, was appointed by the Australian government to advise on the development of Canberra as the nation's new capitol in keeping with Walter Burley Griffin's original plan. Roberts had done the initial drawings to illustrate the Holfords proposal and, when it was agreed that the project of developing Australia's capitol would proceed, Roberts participated in the development on the spot in Canberra, arriving in 1958.
In Canberra he took up an appointment as architect/planner with the then newly established National Capital Development Commission. He was appointed director of architecture in 1965 and first assistant commissioner in 1967. He also worked on New South Wales government projects including redevelopment of The Rocks in Sydney. In 1972 he became dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of New South Wales where he remained until appointed deputy vice-chancellor of Macquarie University in 1984. In 2001 he was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Roberts died in Sydney in 2009.
