Geographer, diplomat, historian, lawyer, and publisher. John Stanley Cumpston was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1909. His mother, Gladys Maeva Cumpston, was a community worker, horticulturalist, and Braille transcriber, and his father, John Howard Lidgett Cumpston, was the first director-general of the Australian Department of Health. John Stanley attended the University of Melbourne and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. During the Second World War he served in the Siege of Tobruk, at El Alamein, and in Lebanon. Cumpston also assisted in the creation and publication of the first reliable map of Antarctica for which he was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London. Cumpston Massif was named in his honour. Following the war Cumpston worked for the Australian Intelligence Corps in the Allied Geographical Section for the Southwest Pacific. He resumed his career with the Commonwealth Public Service and served on diplomatic postings in Chile, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Portuguese Timor. He was departmental historian in the 1960s until his retirement at the end of the decade. Further biographical information at http://trove.nla.gov.au/people/499101
