Anthropologist. Kenneth E. (Mick) Read was born in Sydney in 1917 and educated at King's School, Parramatta and the University of Sydney. During the Second World War he served in the Australian Army, in the Northern Territory and later in New Guinea. He spent two years in Markham Valley in 1944-1945, largely isolated from his comrades and dependent upon villagers for food. After the war he returned to the University of Sydney to work on his M.A. in anthropology, and in 1948 he completed a Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of London. On returning to Australia, Read became research fellow in the Department of Anthropology, Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University.
In 1950-1952 he undertook field work in the New Guinea Highlands studying social structure, religion and social change following the war. He lectured in anthropology at the Australian School of Pacific Administration, Sydney from 1953-1956. In 1957 he moved to Seattle where he joined the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington, becoming Emeritus Professor of Anthropology following his retirement in the mid-1980s. Read's first and best known book is The high valley (1965) based on two years' study among the Gahuku-Gama of the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea. Read died in Seattle in 1995.
