Shier, though inspired by the Pictorial movement, was also interested in portraiture, and belonged to a number of photographic societies, including the Royal Photographic Society, the Professional Photographers Association and the Victorian Salon of Photography. It is recorded by Jack Cato that during a visit to London, Shier's criticism of the photographic department of Scotland Yard resulted in its complete modernisation. (Jenny Carew)"--Label on reverse.
