Professor Campbell was born in Launceston Tasmania, studied law and economics at the University of Tasmania before undertaking doctoral studies at Duke University, North Carolina (PhD 1959). She lectured at the University of Sydney from 1960 before moving to Monash in 1967 and becoming Dean of Monash Law School in 1971. She amassed 181 publications, including 18 books and was a renowned legal scholar, expert in constitutional and administrative law. Awarded an OBE (1979) and Companion of the Order of Australia (2005).
