Historian and political scientist. Don Aitkin was Professor of Politics at Macquarie University in the 1970s, and then Professor of Political Science in the Research School of Social Sciences in the ANU. In 1988 he was appointed the foundation Chairman of the Australian Research Council and in 1991 was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra, a post he held until 2002. Aitkin is a published author and has been a columnist in national newspapers since the 1960s. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Australian College of Educators and the Australian Planning Institute, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1998.
