- Summary:
-
An artist's book about the relationship between a father and a son, and about sounds and the places they can reach. The text was written in Cyprus while the artist stayed in a monastery built on the ruins of a Byzantine church, with a military checkpoint in front of it, and a modern mine nearby, which produces the pigment umber. Among the sounds of hymns, soldiers, and the excavations, he rarely heard birds, unlike his suburban garden in Melbourne. This silence, and a memorable icon of a raven, lead him towards conceiving a bird's eye view of human life, while also suggesting that birds may be "the harbingers or the omens for all those who are displaced, the refugees, those who cross borders, searching - the wanderers." The text has been set in left and right justified columns, with no regard to word breaks, to trap the eye, an invoke the traditional design of early Bibles. Bible commentaries in Greek also appear in the background of the collages on which the text rests.--Based on the artist's statement.
