Henri Martin was the first lion tamer of the modern era, who incorporated animals into his stage spectaculars to great effect. In 1831, the play 'Hyder Ali' opened on the London stage, and was noticed in the Gentleman's Magazine: "An oriental spectacle, entitled, Hyder Ali, or the Lions of Mysore, was this evening produced, in which the principal actors were the habitants of the menagerie at Paris, and M. Martin, their keeper, the hero of the drama. The animals that figured on the stage were two elephants, a lion and lioness, a llama, a tiger, a pelican, a few monkeys, &c." (Oct. 17, 1831). Four years later, Martin had taken his show into the provinces, and had perhaps in the meantime added a kangaroo to the 'troupe'. This regional printing, which features Martin's role in Hyder Ali prominently on the bill, seems to be the sole mention of the appearance of a kangaroo on the stage during Martin's production of the play.--Catalogue description from Meridian Rare Books, July 2014.
