- Description:
-
- [London, England] : Theatre Royal , [1872?]
- 1 broadside ; 50 x 19.5 cm
- Summary:
-
The incredible tale of the Tichborne claimant, a former butcher from Wagga Wagga, proved an irresistible subject for balladeers and satirists following the long running trial and imprisonment of Arthur Orton for fraud. This is actually a satirical mock playbill rather than a bill for a real play. The opposing counsel of Serjeant William Ballantine and Sir John Coleridge are listed as the leading actors; ("specially engaged for the entire run of the piece at immense cost"); the judge, Sir William Bovill (misprinted as Bovil), is the stage manager. This is an earlier version of the broadside, issued before the claimant was jailed on 7 March 1872; in a revised later version an additional fourth act is set in an awful cell in Newgate jail.
- Full contents:
-
- Prologue. Adieu to Ratcliffe and Ratcliffe highway-the Sea-the Storm-the Wreck of the Bells! (An interval of several years is supposed to have elapsed)

- Performer:
- Roger Tichborne (the heir about whose dy[e]ing his mother entertains great doubts) ; Arthur Orton ([just like Roger], troubled with an awful bad memory, but a friend-in-kneed with a be(t)witching countenance, who knows "Wapping Old Stairs," (excuse the grammar), and will sing it, and also give his popular rendering of "Never buy tripe on a Friday.")
- Notes:
-
- Caption title.
- At head of title: Theatre Royal, Westminster. Crowded houses!
- Although the real Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is in the London borough of Westminster, the fictitious "Theatre Royal, Westminster" apparently refers to the Court of Common Pleas at Westminster where the civil case of Tichborne v. Lushington, 1871-72, was heard.
- National Library's copy of this earlier version is trimmed at the foot, and lacks the distribution address and price. There are other minor differences between the two versions.
