- Summary:
-
Mackerel Beach, a winter's tale comprises 20 coloured linocuts as well as numerous other illustrations and anecdotes telling the story of events during a relatively recent winter at this small isolated community north of Sydney, on the western shores of Pittwater, at the edge of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Australia's second oldest nature reserve. Mackerel Beach is a seventy minute bus ride from the city centre, followed by a ten minute ferry ride across from Palm Beach, but is a world away, a place for fibro beach shacks, fishing and tall stories, where everyone meets at the jetty, trundles everything around in wheelbarrows, and interacts with a huge range of protected native wildlife. Several images feature Denton the Scottish terrier (dogs are allowed, but cats are not), as well as goannas, pelicans, a dolphin, a fairy penguin (who was rescued after being caught in a fishing line, and recuperated for a week under the jetty before swimming back to his home on the nearby nature reserve of Lion Island) and the python that got into a galah's cage (and after eating the galah was too fat to get out).
