- The woodblock print was printed using a newer set of woodblocks, made by a professional carver in Kyoto. The famous woodblock print image was originally created by Sharaku in late 18th cenutury. The woodblock set to create this print is also held in the Library's collection at vn6539516 / OJRB ef19.
- Sanogawa Ichimatsu lll, who was called Seifu as a poet, had his haousehold name Mikawaya. When he was young, he became a student of Nakamura Kumetaro, an actor who was very famous in playing a role of women, and Nakamura Kumejiro was the first artist name given to him. In 1784, he succeeded Sanogawa and became Sanogawa Ichimatsu lll and chiefly played roles of young men and women on stage. In 1799, he became a student of Ichikawa Danzo and changed his name to Ichikawa Aragoro. Sanogawa Ichimatsu lll in this painting appears as Harlot Onayo, a role of a woman he played in his latter part of his Oyama life. He died in 1814 at the age of 55, and it is assumed that he should be around 35 when he played Onayo last as shown in this picture. Incidentally, a word Hakujin means a professional harlot mostly used among the people in Kyoto and Osaka redlight districts. His skirt-like trousers of check design were very popular since the time of Sanogawa Ichimatsu l and the check design is not called the Ichimatsu pattern. His short neck that appears from his flashy red costume and a half dozen ornamental hairpins exaggerates the size of his head and represents a fat middle aged man, possibly impressing people an ugly image. --- from the sheet attached, prepared by Takamizawa Kenkyujo.
