The East West Link was a proposed 18 kilometre tollway in Melbourne, Australia, to run from the western suburbs to the Eastern Freeway. The Victorian Coalition Government signed a $5.3 billion contract with the East West Connect consortium in September 2014 to build the road, with work on the first stage scheduled to begin at the end of 2014 and completion by 2019. However, a change in government at the November 2014 state election led to the project's demise, concluding with the Labor state government which opposed its construction, reaching an agreement with the consortium in April 2015 to accept $339 million to terminate the contract. The project attracted public criticism over its effectiveness to reduce congestion, prioritisation ahead of public transport, transparency of business case and local impact on Royal Park and Melbourne Zoo. Local councils and public transport advocates opposed the project and several community groups were formed to block its construction. By August 2014 the project was the subject of two separate Supreme Court challenges and a further case in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.--Adapted from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_West_Link,_Melbourne, 16/6/2015.
