- First editions of these historic volumes filled with colour woodblock plates showing every manner of Japanese doll and toy, considered to be the most important Japanese work on the subject. The prints are executed from designs by Shimizu Seifu and Nishizawa Tekiho. Shimizu Seifu (1851-1913) was a leading Meiji-era collector of omocho (toys), Ningyo (Dolls), as well as artist, calligrapher, and head of a wealthy trading company who studied painting with Hiroshige III, holding in trust important Ando Hiroshige artifacts, including his seals. Nishizawa Tekiho (1889-1965) carried on the work after Shimizu's death and oversaw the completion of the set through 1925. These volumes are filled with 100s of objects providing an excellent reference to Japanese history, culture, religion, and family life through the centuries, with many of these children's objects having been derived from Shinto and traditional Japanese folklore symbolism.
