Tatura is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. Tatura Internment Group was the first purpose-built internment camp for World War II, and consisted of several camps in the region. The camps held prisoners of war (enemy servicemen captured and transported to Australia for the duration of the war) as well as civillian internees who were living in Australia or other allied territories and deemed to be a security risk due to their nationality. Camps No. 1 and No. 2 at Tatura were located less than a kilometre from each other, and the others were at Rushworth and Murchison (Dhurringile). They held around 10,000 to 13,000 people from diverse backgrounds at different times from 1940 to 1947, including Italian, Finnish, German and Japanese internees.
