In 1924 the Norwegian wine merchant and yachtsman Alfred W.G. Larsen commissioned the celebrated naval architect Johan Anker to design and build an eight metre yacht called Varg (the Norwegian word for wolf). Varg's success in racing on the Solent at Cowes continued under her second owner, Lord Henry Forster, a distinguished British sportsman and former Governor General of Australia. Then in 1927 an Australian, the music publisher Frank Albert, purchased Varg, renamed her Norn and shipped her to Sydney, where she was to become one of Australia’s most celebrated racing yachts. Winner of the coveted Sayonara Cup, she reigned supreme at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for almost half a century until 1958, when the Albert family sold her and she slid into inexorable decline. Salvaged after weeks at the bottom of Sydney Harbour, the marine surveyor and wooden boat builder Douglas Brooker judged her beyond repair, but in 2002 Kraig Carlström, a life-long racing sailor and professional photographer, purchased Varg and had her rebuilt near his home in Cygnet, Tasmania, in the famous Wilson Brothers boatyard, where four generations of the same family built beautiful wooden vessels. The Portuguese naval architect David Viera, one of the world's leading experts on eight metre class boats, unearthed Anker's original plans, guiding master shipwrights Michael Wilson and Warren Innes as they reconstructed the Varg over a period of six years, using Tasmanian native timbers, into a breathtaking example of the boat builder's art. This book photographically documents the rebuilding of the Varg, and shows the beauty of her new home, Port Cygnet Bay on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel in Tasmania.—Adapted from text by Bruce Stannard and Kraig Carlström.
