- Biography/History:
-
Professor Douglas Pike was a distinguished Australian historian. Born in China, the son of a missionary, he arrived in Australia in 1924. After a career as pastoral property manager and minister of religion, he became a history lecturer at the University of Western Australia, 1949-1950, and Reader in History at Adelaide University, 1950-1961. He was Professor of History at the University of Tasmania, 1961-1963. Pike wrote two highly acclaimed historical works: Paradise of Dissent: South Australia 1829-1857 (1957) and Australia: The Quiet Continent (1962). However, Pike was perhaps best known for his editorship of the Australian Dictionary of Biography from 1962 until his death.
