"Medea Inc. began in 1984 and was inspired by two women, Mardhi Read and Winsome Willow. Mardi and Winsome were concerned about the lack of crisis support options for women living with a mental health issue. Their research showed that most support was framed within the bio-medical model of mental health, and for many women their mental health issues had resulted from a life shaped by some sort of trauma; often violence, either sexual or physical, and usually the perpetrator was male. In further discussions Winsome and Mardhi decided that women’s mental health was a feminist issue. Today that might sound unremarkable, but in the early 1980’s mental health was very much the territory of the professionals in every way, and overwhelmingly the professionals were male. The concept that individual’s experiences shape their outlook was a radical point of view. Medea was formed based upon two of the main ideas that shape mainstream practice today, the Recovery model and Trauma Based Care"-- Inanna Inc. website, viewed 15 March, 2016. The name changed to Inanna Inc. on 01 June 1993.
