- Summary:
-
Purulia, located at 16 Fox Valley Road, Warrawee, was Wilson's own home, designed in Georgian Revival style and built in 1913. The text is reprinted from a 1919 special number of Art in Australia, entitled Domestic Architecture in Australia, and the sheets were commissioned by the NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders for their annual binding competition. In "A history of the Croft Press," (La Trobe Journal, no. 95, March 2015), Andrew Schuller notes that Jim Walker "struggled with the paper; not only was Alan Walker slow in making it, but he also laid a special watermark of a threaded needle as a symbol for the bookbinders. The paper was thinner where the watermark appeared and the printer could not adopt the usual trick of extra padding because of the slight irregularity in the deckled edge of all handmade paper."
- Notes:
-
- "This edition was designed and printed by Jim Walker at the Croft Press, Cobargo , New South Wales, for the Guild of Craft Bookbinders. It was printed on a Furnival stop-cylinder and handset in 14 point Plantin monotype. The paper, with the Guild watermark, was handmade by Alan Walker at Bemboka. The Preface and Introduction were written by Ralph Lewis, secretary of the Guild. 200 numbered copies have been printed for private circulation who will bind their own copies. There are a further 10 'out of series copies.'"-Colophon.
- National Library's SR copy is "out of series", bound and signed by Ralf Engel. It comes from the collection of Australian bibliophile Harry Muir, with a loosely inserted handwritten letter (undated) to him from publisher and amateur binder Richard Griffin, explaining: "I had to abandon the idea of binding your copy of Purulia and gave it to a young man fresh arrived from U.K. He has done a better job than ever I could and I hope you will be happy with it."
- Printing press device on title page and one large initial drop cap printed in red.
- Binding:
- National Library's SR copy is bound in half red morocco, gilt lettered green leather title label inset on spine, cream and red patterned papered boards; uncut; plain cream dust wrapper.
