Hand bound artist's book containing six etchings (two from double plates) created using various forms of traditional print making. The book includes a folded prospectus on "What falls away" explaining the meaning of each of the six images. The book is based on research into the artist's family history, specifically the life of her great, great grandmother Bridget McNamara, born in Clare, Ireland, who as a 23-year old was held for a year in Cork County Gaol before being transported to Australia as a convict in 1835. After seven years first at the Parramatta Female Factory and then at Newcastle, Bridget was given a ticket of leave and conditional pardon, married John King and settled in the Central West of New South Wales, first Bathurst, then Bedgerebong, near Forbes. The artist retraces Bridget's path and connects the landscapes of Ireland and Australia and the rivers in these vicinities in the form of map-like images. In the text she reflects on the devastating displacement of the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people by her own grazier family, and questions the hidden history of Australia in relation to our failure as human beings to come to terms with our unbearable truth.
- Notes:
-
- Dedication: "This book is dedicated to the memory of my great, great grandmother Bridget King - nee McNamara, b: abt 1810 Ireland - d: 1892 Australia. Famous now...to her family."
- "This book was designed in the studios of Red Rag Press, Townsville, QLD, Australia. Etchings [drawn and printed], text printed and the book bound by the artist in Cork, during a residency with Cork Printmakers in Cork City, Ireland, October 2015." -Colophon.
- "Typography by Nicole Phillips (in her Brisbane Studio). Text is set in Jenson Pro 12pt (on 15 pt) and features Jenson Display italic and Byron Regular [based on the handwriting of Lord Byron] at various sizes for emphasis. And printed on Magnani Annigoni." -Colophon.
- Limited edition of 20 copies (stated as 25 with two artist's proofs in the book, but only 20 copies were actually produced as the Magnani paper factory in Italy closed down after 600 years of production and its Annigoni paper became unavailable).
- National Library's copy is 6/20. It has a unique feature: As the book's text refers to Irish women convicts being the "Mothers of Modern Australia" the artist, a feminist, has hand written inside the folds of the book the names of the 20 historically significant Indigenous women (and one other known to the artist) named by NITV in 2015, in an attempt to offer some semblance of balance and to make a connection with the Indigenous mothers of Australia.
- "This project was supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland." -Colophon.
- Binding:
- Flutter binding. Half bound with green cloth sides and red buckram spine and corners. Embossed decoration on the front cover based on the shape of a map of Ireland connected to the similar shadow cast by a kurrajong tree that grew beside the house that John King built at Bedgerabong. The prospectus/companion book is folded like a map and protected within a two sided green cloth covered slipcase with a thumb tab cut-out.
