- Summary:
-
Freda Du Faur (born in Australia, 1882-1935), was the first woman to climb Aoraki/Mount Cook (1910). The ascent was made in six hours and broke the record at the time. With guides, she also accomplished the first grand traverse of the three peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook, still regarded as an arduous and daring feat. Freda defied convention bivouacking unchaperoned overnight with male guides. She rejected social constrants around dress, designing her own climbing apparel with comfort and safety in mind. Her pioneering climbing achievements demolished the idea that high altitude climbing was out of bounds for women. She literally fell in love with the mountains. She was brave, had incredible stamina, was ambitious and, at times, uncompromising. Poet Rhian Gallagher has written this work in response to Freda's four seasons in the Southern Alps and in response to the extraordinary environment of the Alps themselves. The text is enhanced by images by the Dunedin artist Lynn Taylor.-Based on the introduction.

- "Dartmouth College is aligned to the University of Otago through the Matariki Network. These poems, which form the printer in residence programme for 2016, were printed by Sarah M. Smith, programme manager of the Dartmouth College Book Arts Workshop. Not only is this book an excellent vehicle for creative collaboration between printer, poet and artist -- but it forms a tangible outcome that reflects collegiality between the two universities. The text is handset Garamond and Gill Sans type and the paper is Freelife Kendo 200gsm. The illustrations were produced and printed by Lynn Taylor. Don Tobin and his staff team at University of Otago Bindery bound the edition. Although the design of the book was mainly in the hands of the printer, it was truely a collaborative effort. One hundred and twenty copies have been printed of which one hundred are for sale."--Colophon.
