- Summary:
-
“A work of fiction for children relating the adventures of German missionaries in the Duke of York Islands. The title is somewhat misleading, as these islands are located just off New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago, to the east of New Guinea. The story is set in the period of German administration at the close of the nineteenth century. The name of the author appears to be pseudonymous: the surname can be transliterated as either Braun or Brown, but the former is more likely as it was probably intended to sound German to a Russian reading audience, giving the events in the story a ring of authenticity. On the other hand, the name may also have been inspired by the famous English missionary to Melanesia, Reverend George Brown, who worked in the Duke of York Islands in the 1870s and 1880s.”—Catalogue from Douglas Stewart Fine Books, November 2016.
