Pages 179 and 180 from the Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers (Melbourne, Vic) Friday 7 November 1873. Features two engravings. The upper image is of the Intercolonial rifle matches, Paddington Ranges, Sydney, described on p.186 as "Our illustration represents the New South Wales Rifle Association meeting, held at the Paddington Ranges, Sydney. It will be of interest to note the shooting made by the N.S.W. volunteers, as thirty of their best men will be in Melbourne this month, to shoot in the Intercolonial Rifle Matches. The military weapon used was the Henry rifle, a breechloader, with a .450 bore, and therefore the scores made are on a much higher standard than men can arrive at with old worn-out Hays and Lancasters". The lower image is of the Victorian Court, Vienna Exhibition, described on p.186 as "Our artist's sketch of the Victorian court of the Vienna Exhibition admirably illustrates the multifariousness of our natural products, and the peculiar character of those industries which constitute the wealth and indicate the importance of this colony."

The Vienna World Exhibition or Weltausstellung 1873 Wien, was held during May 1, 1873 - November 1, 1873, in The Prater, Vienna, Austria. The Industrial Pavilion, with its large circular Rotunda, was the centerpiece of the venue. The most important building material was iron, the use of which was regarded as modern in the nineteenth century. There were around 26,000 exhibitors housed in different buildings. A pavilion devoted exclusively to women displayed arts and crafts, but not useful or innovative items. The exhibition was intended to inform about developments in technology and to promote industry and increase sales. However, a cholera epidemic and the stock exchange crash meant that profits were far below expectations.
The New South Wales Rifle Association was formed in October, 1860, ‘To give permanence to Volunteer Corps and to promote Rifle Shooting throughout New South Wales’. The same year saw the formation of the Victorian Rifle Association with similar objectives. "The first intercolonial teams match, Victoria vs New South Wales, was held at Sandridge Range (Port Melbourne) in 1862. Regular meetings were held at which members engaged in target practice, using firearms including rifles and revolvers, and engaged in 'skirmishes', some on horseback."--from the Museums Victoria website, viewed 17 January, 2017.
