'The Mountain Lark' is an opera set in the Australian Alps and which has been described as Australia's first Migrant Opera. The composer, Hungarian-born Bela Dolesko studied at the Music Academies of Budapest and Vienna and with the famous French composer Maurice Ravel, and migrated to Australia in 1950. He conceived the opera with fellow-Hungarian Akos Olah and with Merle Harvey, an Australian, who were both working on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme and wrote the lyrics. The one-act opera tells of a Norwegian tunnel worker on the Snowy Scheme and his wife, who loves a Yugoslav migrant. An accident abruptly ends the affair by killing the woman's husband and her lover. The work was premiered in Sydney in 1962, and featured Elizabeth May, Ukrainian-born singer Nicolas Jewsewsly, English-born singer Bertrand Harrington, and Dutch-born singer John Kingma, and was produced by Steve Rook.
