- Summary:
-
Written for practitioners, this paper provides an overview of the issues unique to domestic and family violence in regional, rural and remote communities. These areas witness higher rates of this kind of violence than urban areas, and their geographical and social structures - as well as unique social values and norms - produce specific experiences of domestic and family violence and impact upon women's ability to seek help and access services. This paper reviews what is known about: prevalence, characteristics of domestic and family violence in these areas, geographical issues, population diversity, service provision, effective practice models, workforce knowledge, and community education.
