The purpose of this study is to gain insight into how prostitute-serving organizations (PSOs) understand the mental health issues facing consenting, adult prostitutes and sex workers. Qualitative content analysis is applied to ten PSO websites from four different countries: New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The qualitative content analysis is supplemented with interviews from three representatives from three different PSOs. It was found that PSOs identify stigma and poverty as significant factors contributing to the mental distress experienced by sex workers. PSOs adopt the harm reduction approach and the peer based model when working with sex workers. PSOs use some traditional methods for improving the mental health of their client base, such as therapy. They also use offer other, less traditional, services to bolster mental well-being, such as relationship and parenting services, poverty relief services, and creativity workshops.
The two marginalized groups most often singled out for specialized services were Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender sex workers, especially transgender sex workers, and migrant workers.
