The twin screw steam ship Pericles was an ocean liner built for the Aberdeen White Star Line at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland for the England to Australia via South Africa route. The ship was launched on 21 December 1907, and left London on her maiden voyage to Australia on 8 July 1908. On 31 March 1910, under the command of Captain Alexander Simpson, the commodore of the shipping line, on a return trip from Sydney to London (via Fremantle and the Cape of Good Hope), the Pericles sunk after she struck an uncharted rock located 5.6 km south of the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, Western Australia. The ship had a large mixed cargo of 32,000 boxes of butter, 35,000 frozen mutton carcases, 6,000 bales of wool, hides, 3,000 cases of apples (picked up in Hobart) of which 500 cases were carried on deck, 25 tons of tallow, coconut oil and 600 tons of lead (with a high gold and platinum content, which was being shipped to Europe for refining) and sundry other items. All 238 passengers and 163 crew were saved and some of the cargo subsequently salvaged, but the one-eyed ship's cat, Nelson, was drowned.
Dalgety & Company operated as merchants in rural areas, wool brokers, stock and station and shipping agents in Australia and New Zealand from 1884.
