The papers include correspondence with botanists and others relating to botanical specimens and the botany of Australia, Antarctica, Norfolk Island, New Zealand and the East Indies ; papers relating to Brown's book Produmus Florae Novae Hollandiae including corrections and additions ; papers re Brown's appointment as naturalist on HMS Investigator, arrangements for the voyage and fossils and minerals collected in Australia ; correspondece re Brown's Australian expedition, 1803-6 ; papers re Capt. M. Flinders and Ann Flinders ; account of Thomas Mitchell's expedition into the interior of N.S.W. ; diary of travels in Australia, 1801-4 containing list of plants and Aboriginal words ; botanical notes and manuscripts by Brown on Australian plants ; paper on plants collected by Charles Fraser, Capt. Sturt, Sir T. Mitchell, W. Baxter, G. Caley , J. Banks, D. Solander and other papers. Also covers the captivity of Matthew Flinders in Mauritius; the publication of Prodromus florae Novae Hollandiae in 1810; and the discoveries by other botanists in Australia and the East Indies. The correspondents include Sir Joseph Banks, Ferdinand Bauer, George Caley, Allan Cunningham, Matthew Flinders, Sir William Hooker, P.G. King, Sir Thomas Mitchell and Olaf Swartz.

Naturalist on HMS Investigator, 1801-3. Collected specimens in N.S.W. and Van Diemen's Land, 1803-5. Clerk and Librarian to Linnean Society, 1805-10; librarian to Sir Joseph Banks, 1810-20; joined staff of British Museum, 1827; President of Linnean Society, 1849-53.
