The papers in MS 7393 include material relating to the Bicentennial History Project Inc. and Dietrich Borchardt's role as editor of the volume Australians, a guide to sources; typescript of "Australians: a guide to Australian history sources"; correspondence with contributors to "Bibliography of Australian studies", ca. 1982-1987; personal subject files, including files on individual publishers, AACOBS, IFLA and files on Borchardt's publications; diaries; family, personal, business and general correspondence; records of Henry Lawson Bookshop, 1984-1988; and, Borchardt's reminiscences, Through a clouded mirror (41 boxes).
The Acc97.206 instalment comprises correspondence, diaries, reminiscences, writings, articles, reports, reviews, letters from family and friends, including wartime letters; files on Australian reference publications, Encyclopedia of Australian archives, information services and libraries, La Trobe University Library history, and Commissions of inquiry in Australia. There are also congratulations on retirement and the Order of Australia, passports, personal documents and the transcript of the National Library of Australia oral history interview (3 cartons).
The Acc01.300 instalment comprises two files of correspondence relating to the journal Australian academic and research libraries; correspondence between the National Library's Harrison Bryan and others regarding the Borchardt festschrift; and, material relating to the History Project Inc. and Australian reference publications (1 box).
- Biography/History:

Librarian and bibliographer. Dietrich Hans Borchardt was born in Hanover. From 1939 he worked as a university librarian in New Zealand. He was appointed deputy librarian at the University of Tasmania, 1953-1964, prior to becoming Librarian, University of Tasmania, 1965-1981, and subsequently Chief Librarian at La Trobe University, Melbourne. Borchardt was a compiler of many bibliographic works and checklists and, from 1970, editor of Australian academic and research libraries. He was joint editor of the publication Australians, a guide to sources (1987) with Victor Crittenden. In 1993, he published his autobiography Through a clouded mirror: reminiscences of a working life. Borchardt was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1982 for service to librarianship.
